4 Undeniable Reasons To Visit Penina Resort Golf Course

Sir Henry Cotton designed and opened the golf course at Penina fifty years ago. It was created on paddy fields with trees, shrubs and contouring to produce the course that has subsequently been accepted as one of the finest in the Algarve. These were the days before mass tourism, certainly from overseas countries and the Algarve was still a fairly quiet region where fishing and agriculture were major employers. The change came when the demand grew for sunshine holidays. With the Algarve relatively close to large population areas in North and West Europe visiting numbers increased and significant numbers began to come to play golf in conditions that were good right throughout the year.

The Penina complex today offers three course, quality accommodation and a number of other activities once players have left the course. Everyone may fancy the challenge of the Championship course, 6500 yards off the yellow tees but an enjoyable holiday centred around golf really depends on playing some reasonable stuff that is worth talking about at the end of the round.

The Resort Course on the complex offers a fair challenge yet should never overwhelm anyone:

  • Golfers can play just the 9 holes if they wish which means they can fit a game in and still have plenty of time to do something else during the day. This is especially beneficial for those who are holidaying with the family.
  • The Resort Course is set in a lovely natural environment and protection of that environment and its wildlife is a top priority.
  • 18 holes off the yellow tees is just below 5800 yards, 700 yards shorter than the equivalent on the Championship Course.
  • An ideal course for those starting out in the game but keen to get on to the course to put their coaching advice into practice.

A holiday at Penina offers everything a group of golfers or a family might want. It is the only complex offering three courses so there is no need for car hire. There are plenty of facilities on site and excellent restaurants offer an a la carte menu. The beach club has a shuttle service in season so everyone can enjoy this part of the Algarve coastline. Golf courses will beckon again. The hotel’s swimming pool and tennis courts are just a couple of the activities on offer for those who have finished with golf for the day. Next morning, the practice ground and off to the first tee for another challenging yet enjoyable round.
