The Western Algarve – A Great Place to Golf!

The crown in the jewel of Portuguese tourism, the Algarve region has it all. Sun kissed beaches, the vast blue Atlantic Ocean, traditional fishing villages scattered along the coastline and incredible local cuisine. For the golf lover, the Algarve offers a little more, however. It is home to a number of fine golf courses making it a perfect stop for a golfing holiday, especially as all are found within an hour’s drive from Faro International Airport.

In fact, in the west alone, there are a number of varied courses, Boavista, Morgado, Penina, Palmares, Alto and Parque da Floresta. Let’s take a closer look at what some of these have to offer.

Parque da Floresta

This luxury resort features an 18 hole course designed by golf course architect Pepe Gancedo. With substantial changes in elevation, the 5670-metre course overlooks both the Atlantic Ocean and Salema, a Portuguese fishing village. With many breathtaking holes, including some challenging par 3’s, Parque da Floresta is a favorite among visiting golfers.

Palmares

One of the first courses built in the Algarve, Palmares has undergone a makeover thanks to golf architect, Robert Trent Jones II. Not only can you expect a challenging, but fair experience, the natural beauty of the course will astound you. Palmares consists of three nine-hole courses, Lagos, Alvor, and Praia. Both Lagos and Alvor offer a variety of challenges, from tree-line fairways as well as links styled holes. Praia is a links course in the classic mould as its 9 holes run along the Algarve coastline as well as beach areas, bringing the wind into play.

Alto

Alto is popular with both serious and recreational golfers alike. The course, designed by Sir Henry Cotton, features one of the longest holes found on the European continent. The par-five 16th hole, aptly named ‘Giant’ is 604m long and requires a massive drive and two long approach shots to hit the green in regulation. Alto’s 18 holes are found between two valleys and consist of meandering fairways as well as challenging, undulating greens.

These are just three of the courses that the Western Algarve has to offer. Many facilities offer pro help, golfing lessons and hotel or resort facilities.

A family affair

Perhaps the greatest thing about the Algarve is the sheer variety of activities. This makes it the perfect place for the whole family. So while the avid golfer enjoys time out on the course, the rest of the family can spend their time on beautiful beaches, touring the surrounding countryside, visiting the fishing villages or enjoying the local cuisine.
