The Perfect Way To Spend Your Spring Golf Vacation In Vilamoura

Planning your golf for 2017

Spring has come and gone this year but many golfers are already thinking ahead to next year. While the golf season begins in the UK in springtime, the Algarve region of Portugal offers superb golfing conditions all year round.

For those who have already decided on Portugal for their next spring golf vacation and have already pinpointed Vilamoura as the epicenter or their vacation, here are three golf courses in the area that you simply must experience.

Oceanico Victoria

The great Arnold Palmer is no longer with us having passed away recently, but he has left his mark on not only world golf but specifically on this little corner of the Algarve. The Oceanico Victoria was designed by the "king" and his design company and is a fairly new addition to the Vilamoura golf resort. The course measures 6,505m and is a Par 72. The fairways are generous but beware of the many water hazards lining the fairways and protecting the greens.

San Lorenzo

This J. Lee design is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the Algarve and only residents of the hotel at the course, the Dona Filipa, are allowed on the first tee.

The holes wind through parasol pines and the closing holes cut through the Ria Formosa nature reserve so nature lovers should keep their eye out and their cameras ready.

The San Lorenzo measure 6,238m from the championship tees if you are confident enough in your driving ability. With Bermuda grass fairways, you can be sure to enjoy perfect lies on every fairway – provided you drive the ball straight, of course.

Penina golf resort

Penina is where golf was born in the Algarve. British golfer Sir Henry Cotton wanted to retire in the sun and chose to settle and build his own personal golf course here. The Penina resort is home to three courses:

The Academy (9-hole but much more than pitch and putt), The Resort Course and The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course.

Penina is the antithesis of the typical modern golf resorts. Catering mostly to the older crowd, the resort has a five-star hotel and the memory of Sir Henry lives on through every corner of the resort.

Staying in the luxurious 5-star hotel in the middle of the resort will give you views of the resort’s courses.
